Time To Bust Out Of The Cocoon

I can't believe the last time I posted was in April. Actually I can believe it.  I apologize for my lack of creativity.  As my compadre says "I got caught up with life."  Truth be told, I had written in a previous post that I was in transition with my life.  This included career and personal  but then, life happened.  Someone very close to me was diagnosed with an illness and time stood still.  Like a caterpillar in it's cocoon, I stayed in the confines of a dark and closed space spiritually, emotionally and physically. I went through life as usual (taking kids to school, family events, meetings, etc) but I was numb.

I can't say what specific action snapped me out of it.  It could be that I hosted my father's 72nd birthday and we were surrounded by family and laughter. I sat back and enjoyed the smiles on every one's faces and realized that my smile was also genuine. I became thankful for life. I came to terms with the fact that some things are out of my control.

So once again, here I am. I just enrolled in school (IPSB) to finish my last two courses to become a massage therapist.  I was able to tap on my keyboard and most of all I was able to breathe deeply this evening and just be.

I hope you will "be" with me.

Musica Monday

Today's Music Monday is one of my favorite groups from back in the day.  It is Digable Planets and the song is "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat).  This should put some umph in your step on Monday.

Musica Monday

First of all, let me apologize because I fell off the face of the earth and not a blog to be found. I thought I would wander in the dark for a while letting the best of my sad emotions get the best of me.

I know consistency is key to being a blogger but I needed to check out from everything for a while.

Now for your groovin' pleasure.  I would like to introduce you to the DDB YouTube Project. His name is Daniel De Bourg and he can sing the hell out of a song!  You can download his mixtape for FREE or give a donation.  I downloaded both and yes, I gave a donation!   The added extra is that his accent is so sexy! Mujeres, turn on your ears. Hombres, this better be on your play list!

I must credit my wonderful amiga Lizz Carroll for introducing me to his music! Lizz is a wonderful writer and you can read her blog Lizz Loves

Cool Quotes

Before I give you the cool quote, let me start with the fact that I breastfed my son for two years.  The girls are still a comfort spot. He likes to snuggle and will often try to put his hands in between them.

Gael:  Dad, I want to see a booby.

Dad:  Me too

So what do I do?  I baked them some banana bread.  I wrote the following note to Chuy.  "It isn't a booby but it's tasty."

Musica Monday: Quitese los chones music

You know the conversation. Damn! When I hear that song it is "quitate los calzones" music, also known as: drop yo' drawers, baby makin' music, makes me want to mmmmhhhhmmm.  There is something that makes the hair on the back of your neck tingle.

One of my favorites is Maxwell "Whenever, Wherever, Whatever"  Isn't that what any woman or man wants to hear?

What's your favorite song that gives you dreamy bedroom eyes?  Write back.

Mama Wants To Brag

I was recently part of a twitter discussion hosted by MomsLA in which the following question was asked: Are moms allowed to brag about their children?  Absolutely! When something your child does falls into perfect place with the Universe, it serves as a reminder that you are in the right place.

Maia wrote this for her English class. Enjoy!

Featured Post: Bragging Rights!

I got my first featured post on Moms LA.  It is titled "The Power of The Pussy: Why Words Matter".

Since it is my first featured post, I figured I have bragging rights. Enjoy the article.

Musica Monday: Whitney Houston R.I.P.

You wonder if there is any truth when they say people go in 3's.  Don Cornelisu, Etta James and Whitney Houston.

It is easy to get caught up on the drama of how she died or how she had addictions.  How important is that really?  Instead, I will remember the great songs she released and how she made Kevin Costner look good in the BodyGuard.

So for today's Musica Monday, the dedication is to Whitney.

Wordless Wednesday

Sorry to post this late in the day.  I spent the morning with Gael in his classroom.  Ahh, the joys of pre-k.  We then went off to La Monarca bakery to have some "pan". He had milk and I had their delicious coffee.

Musica Monday: Not an ordinary lullaby

As you know, I love music.  I love to play different genres of music in my home.  All that sounds good is welcome.

When my first daughter Maia was born, I had a collection of lullaby cd's in English and Spanish.  I would play these for her during the day but at night, the last song she would listen to and me attempt to sing was Mana's song "Cachito."  It has a lullaby effect and the lyrics are beautiful.

"...un adicto de tu sol. Y es que, un solo un cachito, un pedacito de tu luz."

So my song for Musica Monday is this song dedicated to my daughter Maia.

What is your lullaby?

Happy Musica Monday mi gente!

Musica Monday...I love the freebies!

With only one income coming into the house, I have given up things like weekly mani/pedis at the salon, buying coffee everyday and shopping sprees.  A hard one to give up was buying music.  I have a nice collection of CD's and now downloadable music I have purchased from Itunes.  With that said, I love offers for free music.

I get free music from the Starbuck's cards they give out and from KCRW Today's Top Tune.  I get a weekly email announcing the artist and title of the song.  Everyday it is a different genre of music.  If you have an open ear to anything new, check it out and subscribe.

So for todays Musica Monday, check out KCRW and listen to Hector Guerra "What's Up?"  It has a great beat, a must add to the Muevete Maria playlist.

May the good vibes begin...

disclosure:  I was not paid for this post but I believe in sharing good music (especially when it's free)

Musica Monday: You Are Not Alone In This

As I was folding laundry (because it is one of the things I tend to do a lot) I was watching a new episode of Hell On Wheels.  It is one of my top choice shows because it's a gritty western dealing with the building of the railroad and it has one of my favorite rappers as a main character, Common

What does this have to do with Musica Monday you ask?  In the opening scene there is a battle and what caught my attention was the song played in the background. It went perfectly with the scene that was moving in slow motion.  It was "Timshel" by Mumford and Sons.  I was reminded how beautiful the song is and realized I had not heard it in quite some time.

Part of the lyrics to the song are:
And you are not alone in this
But you are not alone in this

As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
  Hold your hand

What this song personally means to me is that I am not alone. I have family, friends and God and for that I am grateful.  It reminds me that my action causes a reaction. So my intention for today is to choose my words carefully.

Thank you.

Breathe...Don't gasp

I wanted to share this post at the beginning of the New Year as not only a reminder to myself but as something we can all share in. (notice I said all?)

I was at the kitchen sink washing dishes with speed.  It was almost pushing the sponge into the plate trying to make it meld into one.  I wasn't really paying attention to the action because I was inside my head making a to do list for the rest of the evening when all of a sudden a big gust of wind came through the window.  It blew my hair back and I stopped what I was doing, closed my eyes and took a deep breath.  I smiled and said out loud, "I hear you. Thank you."  My daughter was walking in and asked who I was talking to. I replied that I was talking to the Universe because it was telling me to breathe.  Her response, "duh mom, if you don't you'll die" to which I took a deep breath again (to keep me from throwing the sponge).

It was then I noticed how I tend to hold my breath when I am trying to rush through a task.  Well, no resolutions for 2012 but breathe.  Let the deep breaths give you a sense of calm, may the deep breaths remind you how blessed life is and may deep breaths keep you from chucking something at your kids!

For music Monday...I choose Breathe (2 a.m.) by Anna Nalick

Also, the picture brings me a sense of calm. It was drawn by Maite who turns 9 today.
